Voting Records website

Climate Voting Records Toronto is an independent website that tracks the climate-related voting records of Toronto city councillors. The website provides information to members of the public – now and at election time – enabling voters to gauge the climate and environmental stance of their mayor and councillors.

This website is an initiative of ClimateFast – a volunteer-based, grassroots community group, dedicated to building strong, informed public pressure to take urgent, substantial, and just action on our climate crisis in Toronto. We are currently looking for policy researchers, designers, data analysts, and developers to join our Climate Voting Records Toronto team!

For more details check out the councillor tracking site.

Background

In early 2024, a working group at ClimateFast began building a website that tracks how councillors in each ward are voting on climate change in City Council. Why is this important? Climate action is urgent! The City has a target of reducing emissions by 65% below 1990 levels by 2030 - and we are struggling to even meet the 2025 target of 45% below 1990 levels. The City is writing a new 5 year climate action plan that will come to City Council in June, 2025. We need councillors to know that their constituents want to see meaningful reductions in emissions, and that we want them to vote in favour of the bold new measures we will need the city to take to achieve our goal.

The building of this website involved collaboration with members from other Toronto grassroots groups including Etobicoke Climate Action, For Our Kids Toronto, TTCriders, members from the Green Neighbour Network, and others. This community project would not have been possible without collaboration and support from these groups. A huge and special thanks to Progress Toronto and Civic Tech Toronto for their continuous support and guidance. This climate voting records website was built from scratch and is powered by webCOMAND.
