FOR PEOPLE, FOR PEACE, FOR THE PLANET

From the Draw the Line website:

"We refuse to stand by while the government and Canada’s richest corporations hoard wealth, gut our public services, fuel climate collapse, attack migrants, exploit Indigenous lands, and prop up a genocide in Palestine.

They think that if they can overwhelm and divide us, we won’t fight back. But climate justice, migrant justice, economic justice, Indigenous rights, and anti-war movements are uniting to prove them wrong."

ClimateFast endorses this stance and, along with dozens of other social justice groups, is making the following demands:

🌍 Shut down fossil fuels. Protect Mother Earth.

💰Put people over corporate profit. Fund our families and communities.

🌾 Refuse ongoing colonialism. Uphold Indigenous Sovereignty.

✊ Stop blaming migrants. Demand full immigration status for all now!

🕊 End the war machine. Stand for justice and peace.

See full demands here.

PLEASE JOIN US - YOU WANT TO BE PART OF THIS!! On Saturday, September 20, we’re drawing the line for people, for peace, for the planet.

From rallies to strikes, marches to gatherings, this September 20, communities ALL OVER THE WORLD will mobilize. Across Canada, we demand that Prime Minister Carney and the Canadian government pick a side: injustice, violence, and climate destruction— or a just and safe future for all of us.

In Toronto:

- rally and march starting 2 pm @ Sankofa Square (Yonge & Dundas) [march with ClimateFast: drop an email to newsletter@climatefast.ca to say you'll join; we'll get back]

- speakers and music (and tabling) starting 4 pm @ Queen's Park

WARDS PROJECT UPDATE

The Wards Project Steering Committee has been working in the background sifting through notes from our conversations with WP Teams, councillors, city staff and climate advocates to determine how best to prepare for the delivery of the 2026-2030 TransformTO in late September.  What we have determined is that money is the issue that comes up time and time again as the number one barrier (excuse?) for not implementing projects and programs, at the speed required, that will allow Toronto to meet its net zero goals.  So, at our first meeting back after the summer break we will dive into the finances of TransformTO.

On September 8 - 7:30-9 pm -  we invite all Wards Project team members to join us for an online discussion with the Energy Mix’s Mitchell Beer. Mitchell will take us through how the City might finance climate action, the costs of inaction, and the economic benefits of implementing TransformTO. We will also have time to update Teams on what is going on at City Hall, and, as usual, have time for our “open mic” for members to share ideas, experiences and resources.

Please RSVP to wardsproject@climatefast.ca if you can come and we will send you a link to the zoom a couple of days before the event! (We will send a reminder closer to the date as well.)

If you are not yet a Wards Project member but are interested in getting involved, please reach out to us!

CLIMATE VOTING RECORDS WEBSITE

Are you passionate about climate action and Toronto’s municipal politics? Do you have a knack for policy analysis and City Council processes? Then the Climate Voting Records Toronto website might be worth checking! Climate Voting Records Toronto is an independent website at ClimateFast that tracks the climate-related voting records of Toronto city councillors. The website provides information to members of the public – now and at election time – enabling voters to gauge the climate and environmental stance of their mayor and councillors.

If you would like to learn more or get involved email us at info@climatefast.ca. This is a fantastic opportunity to use your skills on a high-impact, community-based initiative!

CALLS TO ACTION

SAY NO TO ONTARIO'S BILL 5!

From the Green Party of Ontario:

Doug Ford’s government passed Bill 5 — a dangerous law that guts protections for endangered species, creates lawless zones for insider developers, and violates the constitutional rights of Indigenous nations.

Bill 5 will fast-track destructive development without full environmental assessments or public input. It threatens our water, wildlife, and democratic rights... click here to tell Premier Ford to rescind the bill.

From Environmental Defence:

Bill 5 gives the Premier’s friends special permission to ignore all provincial and municipal laws, including those that protect our farms, forests, wetlands and endangered wildlife.

No guardrails. No accountability. Just the Premier and his friends bulldozing their way across our province. Sign to rescind Bill 5.

From the Wildlands League:

As Trump threatens us, Ford’s response is to grab Trump-like powers by gutting protections for vulnerable wildlife, fast-tracking mining and development projects, trampling Indigenous rights, silencing local voices and creating law-free zones for trusted proponents or areas as designated by Cabinet.

Even though Bill 5, received Royal Assent on June 5, the fight continues. We know Ford is vulnerable when the people are united and speak up for what’s right.

The Premier is taking us down a dangerous deregulation path. We must stand up for vulnerable wildlife and for each other.

Wildlands League is calling for the repeal of Bill 5. Tell your MPP to say no to Bill 5.

From Water Watchers:

Doug Ford’s Bill 5 is the next step in his ongoing assault through massive omnibus bills to dismantle decades of environmental protections. Posed as a response to Trump tariffs and the need for economic growth, this bill is actually about cutting corners and silencing the voices of those who stand to protect the lands and waters we rely on.

This bill is about giving his government sweeping powers to push through projects without proper oversight.

Bill 5 allows Ford to bypass the Greenbelt Act, and make it easier for destructive developments to move ahead without full environmental assessments or meaningful public input. It weakens Indigenous consultation, threatens our water sources, and jeopardizes local farmland and wildlife.

Add your name to the call to stop Bill 5

COMING EVENTS

September 13 @ Christie Pits

From the Workers' Action Centre: "Join our community rally against a racist and anti-immigrant event that’s been called on September 13 at Christie Pits Park (south of Christie Station). Ours is community-led and family-friendly, with music, speeches, snacks and workshops.

Christie Pits is for the people, not for racists. We bring our kids here. The park has a history of anti-fascist organizing. To this day, it’s an important gathering space for migrants, Indigenous people, queer and trans people, survivors of sexual violence, unhoused people, students, and families. The park links Koreatown to Bloor West that is home to Toronto’s beloved East African, Latinx and South Asian communities. Bring everyone you know and let’s make it clear: there is no space for hate at Christie Pits Park."

RESOURCES & INFORMATION

The Toronto Environmental Alliance (TEA) has worked with and studied residential high-rise buildings as they reduce waste, increase recycling and increase composting. TEA has seen that buildings have cut their waste, created stronger communities, improved their buildings, and saved money.

Now, TEA is sharing what they've learned to help more Toronto high-rises become zero-waste buildings. Check out their library of tools, resources, guides and stories! These were created as part of the Zero Waste High-Rise Project.

Want to take action in your building? Explore the TEA library and sign up for email updates.

Live Green Toronto – City of Toronto

Find everything to do with 'living green' in Toronto... reducing and diverting waste; low carbon transportation; and net zero homes and buildings (including financial incentives for homeowners and financing & support for building owners).

Other municipalities may have additional programs, but this site includes everything available from the federal and provincial governments.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Excerpted from The Energy Mix Weekender by Mitchell Beer, Sept 1, 2025:

During their sojourn in Berlin Tuesday and Wednesday [last week], the PM [Carney] and his [Minister of Natural Resources] distinguished themselves by touting the promising market they see in Germany for a fuel that much of the world is looking to leave behind, or will be soon enough. LNG [liquified natural gas] is emerging as a centrepiece of their quest for “nation-building” projects to diversify Canada’s economy and assert our sovereignty against Donald Trump’s tariff warfare and annexation threats...

But NRCan [Natural Resources Canada] acknowledged that Canada is a long way from a firm LNG deal. “These are very much exploratory discussions at this time,” the advisor told The Mix in an email. “Commercially viable projects that have the support of the province, and affected Indigenous communities will be considered by the federal government. Regulatory approvals would follow existing processes and the decision to build lies with proponents and investors.”

No one is seriously suggesting we can shut down gas production tomorrow. But the uncertainties around global gas markets and future demand date back a decade or more, and the case is getting weaker, not stronger. Users of all kinds, from households to big data centres, are looking for affordable, hyper-reliable energy that is quick to install and keeps the lights on in a heat wave or storm. On any of those criteria, gas can’t match the performance of wind or solar with battery backup, supported by heat pumps and building retrofits to boost efficiency.

At some point, you have to wonder…if economic diversification through new trading partners is the point of the exercise, can you call it a nation-building project if you can foresee a time when no other nation will want you to build it?
